I had a ratshack one, got sick of it and got one of these. Cheap, and it is great. (I hear it is a chinese clone of a Hakko one that goes for $90) http://www.circuitspecialists.com/prod.itml/icOid/7307

yeah, a cheapo iron is fine if you can solder well, i have an iron that has a long tip that goes into the iron, so i can just pull out more when i use it up, when it wears out i'll just find a peice of copper to fit in there

It's a pretty nice iron. Precision tip temp control, fine tip, well built. Beats my old radioshack one. And, sadly, it wasn't much more expensive.

Just bought a real nice (for the price, ok, its a piece of s***t) soldering iron at Ocean State Job Lot. it was $2.99 haven't used it yet, but i am doing a USB B mod on my camcorder, so I'll let you know the results!

i'd bet a decent iron could be made for next to nothing en mass. it's just a simple plastic handle, wire you can buy by the mile, some metal which could be rolled to shape, and a coil of resistance wire.
