It's still good to have a palm cable around, for -*test*-('")ing the camcorder prior to doing all the work involved in installing the USB port.
2nd pic shows the connector sticking up through the top access hole. The red dot marks the red wire end of the connector.
I went this way because of cost ($.30 for the connector) and because most of the time I strip the camera board out of the plastic (then it only weighs 35g) so I can mount it in a RC plane.
