Centronics cable didn't work
Hello. I made a Centronics cable that -*test*-('")ed from the connecting leads to the USB end with a multimeter. I couldn't get the darn thing to work with my camera (410 2B 6600). When I would plug in my camera it would come on and say "turning off". Windows XP would not register that anything was plugged in if I use the front USB or the rear. The one thing that I think may have been a problem is that I used a printer cable connection from my HP Deskjet printer and I see that it is similar to centronics. I am not so sure that this is the type of connection that others are using. Those look like the old dot matrix printer connectors. I am going to try a Palm m100 cable and hopefully I will have better results, but I thought I would see if there were any ideas to why this method did not work.

centronics does not give a perfect fit, the cameras' dock at cvs is basiclly a hacked palm cable.

Is the cable I tried to use what is being referred to centronics? I have a HP Deskjet 812C

Also, I bent up the leads that were being used so that they would touch the camera better.

I had similar problems getting the Centronics cable to connect properly. As enigma stated above, the Centronics cable is not a perfect fit. Specifically, you need to cut a piece of card board or similar material the length and width of the cameras cable slot and insert it such that the Centronics connector fingers are snug with the PCB fingers on the camera. Secondly, and most important, the spacing between the Centronics fingers are not exactly the same as the PCB fingers. You can't see this misalignment because because inserting the Centronics connector blocks your view. Here is what I did to get it to connect properly. With the Centronics connector removed look at the fingers on the camera's PCB board. With a felt tipped pen (sharpie) mark the location of each finger on the camera body just below the slot where the Centronics cable is connected. Now partially plug in the cable You should now see how well the Centronics cable aligns with the markings the represent the location of the PCB fingers. You can correct any misalignment by carefully filing the plastic on the cut end of the Centronics connector until all the fingers line up reasonably well. This is a cut and try operation
