HI,
Not to bring up old or dead topics, but I was playing around with boot screens and wav files the other day, I noticed a few things not mentioned here....I initially wanted to change the wavs, not make them silent. I couldn't get my new sounds to load right, though. Mabye they were too big. I ended up finding the smallest wav file, muted it using nero wav editor, and uploaded it to all the wav files. Now my cam is silent. So I don't really get way everybody made a whole pack of silent files. One works fine. Still trying to get some screens to work yet....I've only got a solid gray one that works....need to get a copy of photoshop again...almost killed my cam switching bad screens...

FLASH/WinImg Method Guys, The download FLASH, WinImage, Upload FLASH method is the only way to go.
After dowloading and uploading multiple .JPG images, my P4 partition had become so fragmented that I could not upload ANY images.
I used the Download FLASH option, saved it as a .img file, and mounted it with WinImage.
First thing I noticed was that there was only about 10,000 bytes of free space available in the image, even with all 4 of the .JPG files deleted.
Then I noticed the DEFRAGMENT CURRENT IMAGE function in the IMAGE pulldown menu.
I decided to try this. After defragmentation, the image now had over 115,000 bytes free!
I was then able to inject all 4 .JPG images, no problem.
I saved the .img file, and then used OPS to UPLOAD FLASH back into the P4 partition of my camcorder.
THIS WORKED EXCELLENT, and the screens actually seem to come up a bit faster than before. (perhaps due to all files being read contiguosly?)
My p4 partition has all the original files, none deleted to make space, and all 4 .JPGs replaced with custom images, and there is still over 30,000 bytes free.
If someone else has already posted this, Im sorry for repeating it, but it does work excellent and theres no since in trying to manipulate the files one at a time, because the camera's firmware is obviously not equipped to deal with filesystem maintenance very efficiently.
OPS version .15

Yeah I've never seen 'official' how-tos on that method but everyone seems to use it and most people who don't end up stumbling on it eventually.

wikiwonka had a wiki site for the cvs cams, it seems to be down at the moment, but it did have a nice step by step process i made a while back that explained how to change the screens and wav files

It's standard, but lots of software saves progressive JPEGs by default. You must make sure you disable this (and any other optimizations) for the image to work.
sounds like they (PD) went with jpg to make their job of making the screens as simple as possible, and went with the simplest implementation of the jpeg standard to make development and processor time used as short possible... a correct assumption? What setttings should I save with in Photoshop CS? 280x220, non progressive, non optimized, "medium" quality? File size is about 7.26K on this image...

use alchemy to convert it to a jpeg. You should have used it to make it a png for photoshop. Thats the safest way. Then all you have to do is inport it into the flash file using winimage.

I just save a PSD because that's how I am (I'd use PNG with Fireworks). Then convert with IA.

I used the original stated method, and the only image I could get to change was the logo image. This was the one I edited the least, and only changed the wording on the logo. The other two logos I couldnt get to upload, they were of right size, it just got to 100 percent in OPS and said error in uploading. Any ideas? It didnt work for splash or shutdown.

if your new screens are bigger than the originals, it won't work. the partition table is very tight

Ok, I gave in and used alchemy.
1. Converted the above jpg -> JPEG (no other special settings) and then renamed it to LOGO/SPLASH/SHUTDOWN.
2. Downloaded p4 flash partition and saved a backup.
3. Opened the p4 image with WinImage and "injected" the modified screens.
4. Used command Image->Defragment and save.
5. Uploaded p4 flash using Ops.
Now I've got sweet looking custom screens. Thanks for the help guys, it was easy. The files got bigger when I converted the one form of jpg to the other, I assume because it decompressed them a little? Anyway, if you use the settings I listed for Photoshop above, and just convert your PS jpeg to IA JPEG, it should work for you.

no, they are definitely the right size, even half that of the regular screens. I cant get the files to load.

I keep getting "Error writing file to camera" everytime I try to upload a SPLASH.JPG file, unless it is 0KB. I've deleted the original splash, then uploaded the dummy file, but still can't upload my image. It's 14KB, which is smaller than the original splash file. In fact, I can't even upload the original file. Same error.
Any suggestions?

Download the partition image and use Winimage to inject the files - most recently detailed in this post: forumer.com/viewtopic.php?p=19587#19587" target="_blank">http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?p=19587#19587
The partitions that you're uploading to are badly fragmented, so they don't accept new files easily.

install winimage, use ops to download the p4 partition image from the cam, put the new jpg in it, and upload the p4 image back
