Nope, I still get "Error writing file to camera" error :(
Yet when uploading twists image it works every time! wtf?
carpespasm- 08-18-2005
hmm, dunno what that's about... it is a pretty finicky process though. i havn't been able to get any jpg's that were not made exactly as the guide says to work... ie: convert jpg from cam to psd, edit, convert back to jpg.
Maxwell Smart- 08-18-2005
God damnit, I cant get ANY of my images to work! I even tried the Convert to JPG stuff. What the hell?

Here are a few screens that I converted from my PV2 to work with the camcorder. And what better way to show your support of the forum?
Plug camcorder in and open Ops 0.6. Open camcorder --> Unlock --> Update Directory
Scroll down to the P4 partition and highlight SPLASH.JPG. Now upload the 718 byte dummyfile.jpg over the existing SPLASH.JPG (unzip the dummyfile first). Close camcorder. Unplug.
Replug camcorder, Open --> Unlock --> Update Directory
Go to P4 and select SPLASH.JPG again, this time upload the real SPLASH.JPG from this message. Should show success. Close camcorder. Unplug. Repeat for SHUTDOWN screen.
Here is the dummyfile.jpg I used:
http://camerahacking.mine.nu/phils/demanufacturing/pv2/tft/camcorder/dummyfile.zip (718 bytes uncompressed; 559 bytes zipped)
Maxwell Smart- 08-18-2005
Using your exact instructions, I still get "Error writing file to camera" :(
Again, the only one that DOES work is twist's "hello" Also, I have a B3 3.40 if that makes any difference.

same as all mine. the upload seems kinda flaky to me too. all i can say is try it on another usb controller or computer and see if that helps.

Re: Change the "screens" (Startup, Image Deleted, Alright, here's how you change the screens on the camcorder:
1. Get Ops 0.5
2. Download this software: Image Alchemy and extract / install it somewhere you can access it (it is a DOS-based GUI)
3. Look thru "p4" in the camcorder's directory listing and pick the image you want to change.
Here is a list of names and what they are:
SPLASH.JPG -- the inital "CVS - Home Movies Made Simple" startup screen (24,634 bytes / 24 KB)
LOGO.JPG -- the "PureDigital" secondary startup screen (14,705 bytes / 14.3 KB)
PROCES~3.JPG -- "Camcorder Processed -- Return for Recycling" (24,552 bytes / 23.9 KB)
SHUTDOWN.JPG -- the "CVS -- Turning Off" shutdown screen (18,274 bytes / 17.8 KB)
4. Download the image (or images).
5. Open up the progam "GUI.EXE" that you got from installing/extracting the Image Alchemy program.
6. Go to File -> Select Input Image and select the image you downloaded that you would like to modify
7. Go to File -> Select Output Type and choose "Adobe Photoshop"
8. Go to File -> Convert!
9. Open the image with Photoshop (or The Gimp -- but I don't know if that will work or not), modify it to your heart's content, and save it. (Not Save As, just Save!)
10. Open up the progam "GUI.EXE" that you got from installing/extracting the Image Alchemy program.
11. Go to File -> Select Input Image and choose your PSD/JPEG file that you created
12. Go to File -> Select Output Type and choose "JPEG"
13. Go to File -> Convert!
14. You should now have your new file created (it's in the Image Alchemy directory with the GUI.exe program)
15. Create an empty (0 byte) dummy file named after the file you want to change, and upload it over the original. Now unplug the camera, and plug it back in.
16. Reconnect to your camera and unlock it, then name your new image the same as the image you want to change, and upload it.
Note: The image size for the new image should be smaller than the original image's size! (sizes listed above)
17. Unplug and reboot the camera and you should see your personalized screen!
Note: If you make LOGO.JPG a 0 byte file, it will display SPLASH.JPG the whole time during startup. Please note I take no responsiblity if you damage or kill your camcorder!
thanks twist :D o and guys i also got that messege so i tried twists img and his worked now i cant remember what i did but i think i had his img insalled then i opend his and pasted mine on his and saved it as a png and converted it and then it worked i think thats what i did

Ok guys, I think I managed to replicate this problem on my media partition!
I overran the free space by creating too large a flash image, and consequent recreations of an image with the same name cause problems. (persistant even after format!!!)
I'll bet this behaviour is a bug triggered by overrunning the partition. It appears fairly harmless so, except when you're trying to overwrite the same file. My cam operates normally otherwise.
I also think I have a workaround - every time you upload a file of small or regular size, try going to the "send monitor command" button and type in "flush". If I don't do this, I have to turn the cam off and on. If I do it, the file operation procedes normally.
If others can confirm this helps with the screen updates, I'll make flushing a normal part of file uploads and deletions in Ops.
update: after a few succesful overwrite + flush operations, the problem has gone away on my media partition. I really think there's something to this
cynewolf- 08-19-2005
My "p4" needs some flushing stat!
I have to use a dummy file in place of "PROCES~3.JPG" in order to use
custom 01screens for the main 3.

Using your exact instructions, I still get "Error writing file to camera" :(
Again, the only one that DOES work is twist's "hello" Also, I have a B3 3.40 if that makes any difference.
I'm getting the same thing, with both your hack .jpg and the camhack.com startups. I can only get hello to work also. flush doesn't seem to help either.

I posted this in another thread, hopefully it'll work for you too. I upload twist's "hello" screen first, then right after I upload the one I want to use. WORKS EVERY TIME! WOOT!

I am having problems chaning my SHUTDOWN.JPG.. I uploaded a 0byte file, shut down camcorder, unplugged, plugged back in and then tried to overright with a file I made (same as SPLASH.JPG) anyway I got an write error.. I noticed that I had to take my batteries out to get the camera to turn off... It was in a "hung" state..
So far I have tried all kinds of things
-Repeating the process several times - All failed
-Repeating the process sending monitor flush in between each step
-Repeating the process using a 220byte file instead of a 0
-Repeating the process using 220byte with monitor flush
-Repeating the process with the "hello" image -- Interesting note here, I was FINALLY able to write to SHUTDOWN.JPG using the hello image, but it didnt show during shutdown, and when I tried to over write it with my image, it went back to 0byte..
Anyone have any ideas? Cam still works, just no shutdown screens...

I saw this in the other topic and have had no luck. I can't even get the hello file in there now. I can upload 0byte or bogus text file, but now nothing will overwrite my splash.jpg. Tried using flush, piggy-back loading, nothing! I'll keep banging my head on the wall.
Update1: Got hello loaded after loading bogus text file, booting camera, shutdown, plug in camera, upload hello.
Update2: Got your file (hacking made simple - i likey) in there after same process as noted in Update1.
Load 12byte text, close, unplug, power-up, power-down, Plug-in, Open, Unlock, Upload. It takes!
Ops 0.6 - w/ CVS B1
Seems to be working fairly consistantly.
Maxwell Smart- 08-19-2005
w00tage Great! Glad you like my work ;)

Using a 0 byte dumm doesn't seem to work. I use twists "Hello." screen as a dummy and it seems to work every time. Maxwell Smart suggested this in "The Camcorder Customization thread!" and it seems to work. Thank you all who have contibuted to this project....I enjoy seeing what skills you guys have.
