My guess is that filex deals poorly with fragmentation... perhaps it even insists on writing the file contiguously.
If that's the case, you could have had lots of free space "holes" in the filesystem, but not any one that was large enough to accept the new file.
I've also played around with 0 byte uploads, and this cam even hates them on partition 0 - I had them hang my cam a few times. I'm not sure the 0 byte uploads ever freed up the original files they were overwriting.
If that's the case, perhaps we could copy all the remaining files on p4 to a temp folder, format the partition, and write them all back again. That would be a pretty easy way to kill a cam, though, if it screwed up halfway through :)

Yeah, I'm not up for that kind of risk just yet!
One slip, and you get another "parts cam".

Here are my startup/shutdown screens. I didn't bother with a replacement logo screen.
Maxwell Smart- 08-25-2005
You gotta use the Image Alchemy Prog, thats the only way ive gotten um' to work.
radarman- 08-25-2005
Yep - that's what it took. I now have custom startup and shutdown screens. I didn't bother with a logo screen at all.
Thanks!

Well I think BillW was 100% in his reference to over running the partition and fragmentation. I could not get my new splash/shutdown screens to display, even though they had been uploaded.
I ended up deleting the "return for prcessing" pic and then was then able to reload my shutdown pic and have it display correctly. However, I still couldn't upload my splash, so I deleted the logo pic too. I then was able to upload the new splash, and then also reload the logo. Very strange...

Not so strange if you consider that the intended use probably didn't involve many deletions and additions. I suspect those are debugging features that were left in the code.
I suspect that the flash memories are loaded from a single image file, and that the factory programs the USP.BIN separately (probably much the way BillW's OPS tool does) The fact that the file is in it's own private partition says a lot to me.

Well, after feeling like I was insane! (trying over and over agian to change the pictures) I finaly got it to work! All I can say to someone having trouble is try over and over (and over) again! Of course, follow all the instructions that have been left here

When deleteing the Proccessed images to make room, remember there are actually 3 of them, the JPG and 2 ZBMs one is higher resolution
CAMPROCE.ZBM 38,432 bytes
PROCES~3.JPG 24,552 bytes
PROCES~3.ZBM 30,832 bytes

Perhaps a dumb question but why is Image Alchemy the only program to be used? I'm not familiar with it but at a quick glance it looks as if it's strictly DOS based.
Thanks

Anyone else try my method using the Gimp? I posted the required settings near the beginning of this thread, and they worked for me - I replaced the shutdown screen and it worked fine.
Maxwell Smart- 08-26-2005
It runs in XP fine, the reason is because the original images were created with Image Alchemy so it looks for the header info that alchemy puts into the jpg file.
Corscaria- 08-27-2005
GIMP worked for me too, that -*test*-('") pattern screen i did was saved with GIMP

so is IA what PD used when making their screens? what exactly is it that makes IA able to make workable screens that making a regular jpg doesn't?
cadmonkey- 08-27-2005
Well, the first 96 bytes of SPLASH.JPG read
ÿØÿà JFIF H H ÿþ .Handmade Software, Inc. Image Alchemy v1.13
ÿíˆPhotoshop 3.0 8BIM%
It could be as simple as looking for that or maybe theres something more in the header data.
Bill - when I tried with the GIMP I tried from a new file - did you use those settings when editing a copy of the original? Just using those settings on a new file from scratch were not successful for me.
