CVS 6550 Not Recognized By Windows I've constructed the USB cable and checked, double-checked, AND triple-checked the pinout. However, when I plug in the camera to my computer NOTHING happens. NADA!
With regards to the camera, I do not hear a beep (and no lights illuminate) UNTIL I unplug it from the USB port on the laptop, then I hear two beeps and the Ready light flashes. Strange, hmmm?
With the camera unplugged from USB, it seems to power up just fine. I am also able to access the Firmware page. The camera is FULL so I cannot verify whether I can take further images or not.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

some usb cables are not properly colored to spec, say, for instance, the data lines are the wrong colors. does windows detect an "unknown device"?.
use a continuity meter on your usb cable, -*test*-('")ing from your adapter end to the solder joints, making sure they are pinned out right

CVS 6550 Not Recognized By Windows SaturnNIGHTS, thanks for the reply.
I will do the continuity check, and try to flip the white/green data lines just in case.
To answer your question, when I plug in the camera, Windows does nothing. No hardware detected whatsoever.
Thanks,
matt

if windows is not even detecting the power draw, that's either the cable's definitely messed up , or that those ports are failing/have failed/are not supplying the power under excessive load, due to a short.
do other usb devices function with that port? if so, the wiring of the usb cable itself seems to be a fault. if you have front and rear usb ports, also try using the rear ports. some systems cause the camera to act flaky with the front ports, but work fine with the rear mobo ports.

Saturn,
You bring up an interesting point. Does a PC detect a device on the USB bus simply when it sees a load on the 5V line? In other words, if I only attach the red/black wires from the USB connector to the camera - how far should I get with respect to Windows?
Thanks again for your input.

well, in windows, it should give you some sort of message that there is power draw without enumeration . if it doesn't notify you immediately, you should be able to locate the load of the device in your usb hub properties in your "system" control panel

Here is what I found:
USB red to camera PIN 6
USB black to camera PIN 2
USB white, green NOT connected
Windows still does not detect anything. Pin 2 measures 5V, so I don't think the current draw is excessive. Actually, I measured the current. It is approx. 80mA.
The only indication I get on the camera is when I DISCONNECT it from the USB port of the computer: Ready light comes on, then off; the camera beeps twice.
Starting to think I have a faulty or damaged CVS camera.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
matt

try a linux live cd and then boot up and plug in the camcorder, then once it is plugged in type, into a terminal/console
"dmesg |tail"

So tell me what this means?

kolosus,
Are you having similar problems?
I have not yet had a chance to hook this camera to a Linux Live CD'd box, but will soon. Let's see how we compare...
Thanks,
matt
SaturnNiGHTS- 12-19-2006
it means the device was detected. to give us an idea, type "lsusb -v" and look for the "saturn" device. use - and - to scroll in the console. if it detects it there, we have a windows problem
kolosus- 12-19-2006
Actually, I have two cameras (PV2). One of them is working. The output is from the camera that is working. Once I understand what the output is I'll connect the one that is not working.
For some reason, Windows recognizes the camera as a "Unrecognized Device". Even though it detects the first camera fine and is happily downloading pictures from it. As soon as the second (unrecognized) camera is plugged in... nothing.
If the camera is turned on when I plug it into the computer, the camera shuts down, like it should. But the green 'Ready' Light does not come on, and no beeps. The only beeps that I get is when I disconnect the camera from the computer.
I had posted about this problem before on the forum, but I didnt solve the issue. Now that someone else is able to 'duplicate' the problem I bring mine up again. I didnt want anyone to feel like I was pulling their leg!
SaturnNiGHTS- 12-20-2006
what model is it again?
kolosus- 12-20-2006
Sorry for the late reply SaturnNiGHTS. I dont come to the forums as often as I used to. Once a day, sometimes skipping a day.
Back on topic. Both of them are model 410s. 2B. One came with firmware 6550 (which I upgraded to 6600) and the one with the problem came from the shop with 6600.
I've never been able to get windows to play nice with the latter one, so all the settings in it are 'factory' settings. I did open it up to solder a usb(b) connection directly to the PCB.
