FF2 and 6550 FW - *very similar*
Guys, I took a break from mapping the 6410 comments to the 6550, and did a quick experiment. I attempted to use the first two bank's comments against the FW from the FlatFoto2. They are nearly bit identical! (not much of a surprise, given that initialization is going to be similar) So close that running the output of disv8 through BeyondCompare produce no significant differences through the disassembled portion. It appears that the 6550 may simply be nothing more than PD taking advantage of newer firmware from SMaL. I haven't checked it against the 6520 FW, but I'm amazed. I may now switch to mapping the FF2 firmware, especially now that everyone else is having the fun of mapping the hardware. The functions in it are far more interesting, especially the menu and translucent "info" screen functions. If anyone wants to see the 6550 comments finished, shoot me a PM. It's pretty grueling work to find out how the 6550 does nearly the exact same thing as the 6410... I'm going to post the unfinished 6550 comments file on my website, though - in case anyone wants to run with it. The entry points should be mostly correct. BillW has pointed out that I may be "disassembling" a JMP table incorrectly - which I still plan to investigate.

Are you sure you wouldn't rather map an FF3? It has tighter security for first partition and much less for second partition which appears as a standard mass storage device. I think new Pure Digital OTUCs that will be released at Rite Aid drugstores late this summer may use SMaL's la-*test*-('") 6695 firmware as a base. Or then again PD may not even use SMaL for newer cameras. Note that FF3 firmware works fine on an FF2, with the only negative being slightly larger raws with black edges on right and bottom (due to increase from 2mp to 3mp). Good luck on creating FF2 comments file - How soon before you post results? Can you have it done before camcorder is hacked?

I hope to have it finished soon. I got a bit side tracked the last few days with our dog (involving a trip to an "emergency" vet at 2 in the morning) I'm going ahead with the FF2, with the hopes that once I understand what is going on, I can backport the FF2 to the 6550. BTW - I posted my current firmware.comments file. It has some inaccuracies, but I'm hoping the trace works them all out.
