First ever CVS Red case mod?! *** UPDATE - 05.05.05 *** Hmm, I haven't seen anyone posting a Case Mod for the camera, so I may be the first to do one... How cool is that?
Anyways, I was hoping to get my digiCam back on time, to shoot the whole process of this mod, but sadly, it is still not here, and I have a deadline to meet (this is going to be a birthday present to my girlfriend).
This mod is going to be a complete facelift for the camera, starting from the case, all the way to the fonts, so stay tuned.
Since I can't wait any longer for the digiCam, I snapped some shots with my Nokia 6600, and here are 3 of them, just to give you a taste of it:
Here's a short summery of what is planned for this mod: (bold = completed tasks)
- Custom Audio-USB Cable
- Custom Port for Audio-USB Cable (Detachable, in case I ever need to open the case again)
- Body paint: Satin Black (The picture above has the masking tape still on, in case you were wondering)
- Front and Back Labels: Giraffe texture with custom graphics (Finished the design, but still needs to be sent to the printing house, to be printed as a sticker)
- Giraffe-themed TFT screens for all camera functions
Stuff I'd like to add, but will not be included in this project:
- "Activity" LED
- Hand strap (still might make it into this project)
- Snap-on Macro and Zoom Lenses (would love to have adjustable ones, but that's a bit too much to get into)
- Charging Cradle
There are a few "secrets" not visible in the above pictures.
I will hopefully get a normal camera tomorrow, so I will re-shoot everything, and upload high-res photos of everything, with much details and explanations.

Update - 05.05.05
To start you off, here are shots of the finished Front and Back Covers:
(With, and without, the masking tape.)
Now for the cool stuff...
This is a better shot of the custom cable I made inside the camera. This cable is soldered onto the PCB, and hooks up to the custom USB port on the inside. As I said before, this was done to allow future modifications, should the need arise. (The photo on the right is a glimps of the custom USB port)
Ok, I know this camera is not that good at close-ups, but you can still make out the port, and well, you get the idea:
Did you notice anything "wierd" in that last one? No? Well, maybe this one will make it easier for you:
Still no clue? Ok, I'll tell you what it is. There's no ginormous hole on the side of the camera anymore. Since I made the port at the bottom, there's no need for the hole anymore. And, as a bonus, I get extra support for the PCB board. :D
Here's a view of the filled hole from the outside, and of everything put back up together, with the cable attached to the camera:
A little technical mumbo jumbo:
- Custom USB cable was made out of a USB Mouse cable, and a CD-ROM to Sound Card cable connector.
- Custom USB Port was made out of a Sound Card port.
- Custom in-case USB cable was made out of a USB cable of an old Palm Pilot cradle.
- Paint used for this job was a spray paint for plastic with a Satin finish.
- Hole was filled with a plasterin-style plastic, that hardens after 45 minutes, and can be sanded, painted, etc. after 3-4 hours of drying.
- Masking tape used was a highly cosmic brand, which can only be found in one store, in a back alley in New York City. This was by far the single most important tool in this project, and if it wasn't for its unique cosmic qualities I may have never been able to achieve this. So thanks, Cosmic inc. for hooking me up with this wonderful product.
Hope you find this interesting/usefull in any way. I sure enjoy(ed) working on it, and will probably make another one after this one is done, with all of the features I want to add. If anyone is interested, and has a couple of bucks (around 50, actually) to shed, I'd be happy to mod his camera for him in exchange for a second one for myself. (Since I'm ovr-seas at the moment, and short on cash, I wont be able to get me a second one anytime soon.)
My next update might take a while, as I'm still waiting for the labels to come from the printing house.
I might upload the TFTs first though, so stay tuned, even though I plan on making the TFTs match the labels, so there will be minor changes in the backgrounds. (Since the label has a certain patern, and the backgrounds will have the same pattern continued, I will need to offset the TFTs based on how the label is placed.)

Re: First ever CVS Red case mod?!
1. I still don't have the FlatFoto2 CD, and I would love it if someone can email it via Gmail, or seed it as a torrent. (I need this ASAP, so your help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!!)
By asking for torrent links, you're asking someone to break this board's acceptable use policy, and risking getting them banned for sharing. I understand your need, but we try to keep things focused on legal reverse-engineering activities at this site. If someone were to post such a link it would have to be removed, because we don't want to jeapordize our nice new forum.
2. I got BillW's fonts, and I would like to be able to make my own, can anyone shine me some light on the subject?
It's been a while, but here's the process to the best of my recollection.
The lang-en.dat in the camera is the file that holds the font data, along with text for system messages and other stuff. I used Imagemagick to convert the lang-en.dat file from a monochrome RAW into a monochrome bitmap that was 8x16384. Then just load the bitmap into an image editor (I used The Gimp) and make changes to the font. Be careful not to screw up the non-font data, which appears as semi-random snow When done, use Imagemagick to convert back into monochrome RAW.
You'll have to play around with the Imagemagick command switches, and I recall having to change the file extension... sorry, I didn't document the process, and I don't have Imagemagick installed on my home system right now.
3. I used BillW's bitmaps as a guide for the image size of the screens, but they're in 69 dpi, instead of 72, or such. Can anyone tell me if it's the right resolution, or provide me with the originals from the camera?
dpi is unimportant. The only thing that matters is that the images are 280x220. Forkboy's pv2tool will strip out dpi information anyway when converting to the camera's native TFT format on upload.
The case mod looks neat... Thanks for sharing the results!

Clearly, that was not my intention. I figured that since the old version, and all other drivers, was free, that this one would also share the same license. I figured it's the same as WinXP downloads, where you can either download them for free, or buy a CD copy of them.
That said, if anyone does have a copy, please PM me. :D

That you very much, I will give it a shot.
Do you think it will also work with a program such as Photoshop?

Ok, cool, that's good to know, thx.
Thanks for the help and feedback.

Re: First ever CVS Red case mod?! I assumed your intentions were good. Believe me, we would all be sharing ff2 drivers if it was legal.
...I figured that since the old version, and all other drivers, was free, that this one would also share the same license.
The other camera drivers are free of charge to download from the manufacturers websites, but none of the companies involved have granted redistribution rights to the general public. Copyright law prohibits redistribution, unless those rights are explicitly granted by the creator of the work.
I'll stop beating this dead horse, but here's a reference to back up what I'm saying if anyone is interested...

It's been a lifetime since I last used Photoshop. It's worth a try... rename the lang-en.dat file with a .raw extension and try the raw import. The main thing here is you have to be able to tell PS that the image is monochrome and 8-pixels wide.

If that's the only issue, than there shouldn't be any problem. I'll give it a try in a Photoshop.
Thx.

Wow! Take a look at that cable! It looks really awesome, I love the design. Where are you going to drill the hole for the new camera port, the bottom of the case? Also, where did get the cable that is soldered to the camera? The part looks really familiar.
senseBOP- 05-05-2005
He he. Glad you like what I've done with it, but this is really only the beginning!
Turns out I have the hands for soldering and stuff, cause I totally dig my new cable. It looks completely pro now. I'm not sure if I took new pictures of it, but I pulled the heatshrink tighter and closer to the sound plug, so it looks and fills more "pro" now.
Stay tuned for the new pics.
As for your questions:
- The new port is located at the base. I will be updating this thread (hopefully today) with higher-res pictures, so you will be able to see it clearly.
- The cable soldered to the board is one from a Palm Pilot cradle, if I remember correctly. It could be from a mouse, but I'm pretty sure it's from a cradle.

I just got a usb cable for a handspring from a dollar store!
The connector he has in the camera is a standard latching header from molex...and that particular style is only available from molex
