how to clean out old SMaL drivers from Windows
Most of us playing around with these cameras wind up in driver hell at some point - where you have so many drivers installed you don't know which is which. Here's a quick Windows procedure for clearing out the driver inf files, which will allow you to start over clean. This howto is tailored to those that aren't totally comfortable with the ins and outs of .inf driver description files. 1. Go to START->Search->For Files or Folders... (the search window will pop up) 2. In the menu box labeled LOOK IN, choose the BROWSE option at the bottom. Browse to C:\WINNT\Inf (adjust path if Windows is installed elsewhere) 3. In the box labled CONTAINING, enter "0dca" 4. Hit the SEARCH NOW button. 5. Double check each .inf file that pops up in the right hand panel by opening it with notepad - make sure it's mentions SMaL, Foxz2, etc. If it does, delete it (or rename it's extension) in the right hand panel. 6. Plug in the camera - if it still has a driver, uninstall it from the Windows Device Manager, and then unplug the camera. The next time you plug the camera in, you will have a clean slate - Windows will ask you for drivers, and you can point it to whichever drivers you want.

what about windows xp?

Substitute c:\WINDOWS for c:\WINNT. Otherwise I think the instructions are pretty much the same.

there is no inf folder in my windows directory

The INF folder is a hidden directory. In Windows Explorer, click TOOLS then FOLDER OPTIONS. Next, click on the VIEW tab and under "Hidden files and folders", make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected. Click APPLY then OK and it should show up.

In Win XP, I have left the camera unplugged, uninstalled the drivers (via show hidden devices) deleted the unwanted .inf files, as well as the.pnf files, and even edited the references out of the registry, rebooted, and then conected the camera, to reinstall it, only to end up with the old ddriver returning, or a mixed assortment of files associated with the driver (e.g., how does libusb0 get itself attached to the device?) what files am I missing in my clean slate procedure?

There are no idiotic questions unless you ask the same one twice. :wink:hehehe... that's funny ... and so true. That, and if you get three answers to the same question, and NONE of them work.  <insert Homer> D'OH! </Homer>
