mac osx M200 03.62 M200 camera.
Holding down record delete returns this window:
FW-VERSION 03.62
Camera ID:
Not Initialized
PCB VER: B3
I'm running Leopard on an iBOOK G4.
All functions of the camcorder work.
SaturnDiskMounter says it cannot find camcorder.
When I unplug and turn off camcorder and then plug the carmcorder in; it comes on. I click mount and get the same result: cannot find camcorder.
PureRead has a blank screen.
I'm certain that the USB cable is wired correctly. Its plugged in directly, not through a hub.
All my other usb peripherals operate.
Tell me, please, what step(s) I'm leaving out.

none. those software packages are obsolete for the newer versions of the camcorders. you'll have to use avidownload/mediadownload for now.
crazymonkey- 09-15-2008
Sorry to dredge up this post - I checked all the various links and have tried PureRead and all incarnations of the Saturn tools.
I'm running 10.5 on my mac, is there nothing that works? I couldn't find anything when googling around for avidownload/mediadownload.
P.S. - my brand new camera works great with the la-*test*-('") version of ops on my work laptop, but the permanent solution would be to get it working on my mac...
SaturnNiGHTS- 09-15-2008
you'd be better off searching for those two on the forums, instead of on the general internet. too many generic names out there. try "applications" for starters.
crazymonkey- 09-15-2008
Funny - searching for avidownload or mediadownload brings me back to this posting.
I'll keep searching, but any links would be supremely helpful.

Ok, got it working...
For those of you on an Intel Mac (running 10.5) try this -
1 - avidownload-0.2 (that's the version I used, there may be newer versions)
2 - open a terminal window
3 - cd into the expanded avidownload src directory
4 - run: gcc -o avidownload *.c -lusb -framework IOKit -framework CoreFoundation
The included readme in this particular version said to use *.avi (but I think the author may have been suffering from sheer exhaustion when it was written).
Other notes - I found my challenge/response keys using another piece of called saturnchallenger (search these forums). Use the -framework bits from above to compile that as well. I put the resulting text files into my home directory in a file called .saturnkeys. I also created a ~/saturn_vids directory and it was filled with the contents from my camera. One last gotcha - use VLC to view the videos/convert them.
Some final questions....
1 - Is there a gui version? You know us mac users and our pretty ui's....
2 - Can I repost any of my above posting to my personal site? I have a few other friends interested in the various steps I took along this journey.
Awesome site - there will eventually be CVS HD cameras to hack - so don't go anywhere!
crazymonkey- 09-15-2008
Oh, and PPS - should I be using a newer version of the avidownload software?
Am I missing anything?
crazymonkey- 09-15-2008
A couple of changes - VLC doesn't work as I remembered.
I've been using:
http://ffmpegX.com/index.html
Which is free (formatting is a bit wonky).
SaturnNiGHTS- 09-16-2008
there is no gui version right now. there is a cross platform release in the works, but it's nowhere near finished. i hacked avidownload together for my own needs, and i posted it in case other people found it useful.
and there are newer versions of avidownload available in the avidownload thread. i think the title of the thread itself says "currently version 0.5".
and yeah, i was tired. i released three versions of the app all in the same night, around 2am. the later versions have readme typos and bugs fixed.

so two remaining items
1 - do you guys mind if I replicate this info on my site
2 - should I use the la-*test*-('") version of avidownload?

SaturnNights - I've been working on something else so I really haven't followed things here for a while. Did the source I sent you help any in your efforts at cross-platform development, or was I too screwy in my coding to be of any help?

it did help, very much so. --smile-- i really appreciate the time and effort you put into it...i've just felt bad that i wasn't able to contribute equally to it at the time. i'm catching up now, though.

1. no, and i'm serious when i say this. having this information makes a snapshot of our progress...which means it may very well be completely obsolete within a month or so. which is very frustrating to everyone...the newbies coming in , and the veterans
the best thing you can do is not reference software versions, and link to the software distribution threads and main howtos. that would probably be most helpful for all.
2. yes, most definitely. many features have been added, such as much faster data transfer, proper time calculations, better directory creation, optional camcorder formatting...the list goes on. have a look, decide for yourself.
i've gotten it down to a science that simply executing "avidownload -f" will open, unlock, scan, download all to a dated folder, check, then format/powerdown cam for next use. it's wicked.
which is why i also think for the moment, a gui version is not really all that necessary. just make a terminal launcher to that app with that argument. click the icon, a window pops up, scrolls content, closes out, your camcorder's ready for more use, and you got a folder of goodies waiting for you.
