Macro "gauge" I have set up my cam to take macro shots, but it's a real pain in the a$$ finding the exact distance the cam needs to be from an object.
I know the focal point is 1", but it's difficult to "eyeball" an exact 1" resulting in about 1 out of 10 good pics.
Any ideas on how to accurately gauge the distance from the lense to an object (not to mention in frame!)?
Also, while on the macro subject, has anyone modified the flash so it dosn't wash out the image? I've tried paper over the flash to diffuse it, this works good but not great or always accurate.
In any case, I know I should just slow down and take my time setting up a shot, but If I think something looks cool I like to grab the camera and shoot.
Any thoughts?

Bend up a rectangular wire frame that fits to the camera and extends the exact distance you need and is wide enough to be out of the frame. Then just grab the cam and shove the big end against the subject and click.

A piece of string works well too. Remeber those little "document" cameras had different markers on the string for different focal lengths...made espionage fun!
