new Mac OSX downloader with GUI
I've updated Loren B's old pureread for the original dakota camera so that it now works with the CVS camcorder! It is a nice-looking GUI. Download version 0.0.1 here. It's version 0.0.1 because there is almost no error checking. This program supports only three functions -- refresh (which lists the files on the camera - file sizes are incorrect), download a single file (just double click on the file), and download all files. Files are downloaded to the desktop, and be warned: existing video files may be overwritten, so once you download a video, move it off the desktop. Deleting must be done manually with the "delete" button on the camera. Please private-message or email me if you have problems with it.

bravo morcheeba, i know one buddy of mine that'll be happy to see he'll be able to use the saturn on his iBook.

It seems my glory of having first Mac gui downloader was short lived. Though my version was mentioned in the MAKE: article :D As for the VLC crapping out at the end of the files, this happens on my version (ported from Corscaria's program) too. They work fine, but something is weird about them. But this weirdness is persistent across all the current download apps.

heheh.... sorry bout that, cmstar. just that seemed like this one was the first simple one. my mac weilding buddy probably couldn't install something that didn't come in a stuffit, and this seems easier. thought yours was more of a proof of concept

Oh no! Sorry cmstar - I did a too-quick check and I thought your program was command-line. I wanted to avoid installing usblib, so I didn't try it. If I had known there was a gui already out there, I wouldn't have wrtten another one :( . I'm planning on maintaining it a little (to get it mostly functional, but leave a few annoying bugs ;)) and then setting it free (it's GPL). I wasn't planning on doing a combined camcorder/camera version. Four features I want to add relatively soon: - Show correct file sizes - Show date & times of record - Ability to set clock of camera (my camera thinks it is 1924) - don't overwrite files And then later I want to add the delete-file routine. People with video troubles - do my original sample videos have the same problems as the downloads? I did a byte-by-byte compare and these are exactly what I download.

I don't have a Mac to run on, but looking at your source - are you really reading the FAT from bRequest=0x54, or is that a holdover from the other camera?

morcheeba- 08-08-2005

holdover :-) But I plan to eventually.

I split the off-topic stuff from this thread into a new one in "discussions"... forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=616" target="_blank">http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=616

The great thing about this app is it's very Mac like. Works out of the box without installing anything! I already use the original version for the original Dakota camera which may have better pictures then the PV2 versions. I'd like to see a version of this app that works on all 3 Camera types would be great for Mac users. Thanks worked fine the first time I used it! i've not yet used the other app and may not since it requires installing stuff likely not needed for anything else. Using Quicktime the sounds does go in and out. VLC plays good both video & audio. I do get an error message at the end . "access_file: searching too far" thanks again

The new version 0.0.2 is out! Improvements: filesizes and record dates are now listed. Same problems: will overwrite existing files. New problems: the files are downloaded with different names (this isn't major) I now walk the directory structure to produce the listing. But, I actually download the files with the old command that specifies an index. It should line up, but I wouldn't be 100% sure. (Note above the screenshot: I desoldered my flash memory chip after recording the 5th picture. That and removing the batteries for over 24 hours was enough for it to lose time)

wai- 08-10-2005

if you now have the recorded-on date/time, are you setting the files to have the correct creation date/time?

BillW- 08-10-2005

PICT0006.AVI, PICT0007.AVI, and PICT0008.AVI are very telling... I for one welcome our timetravel overlord!

carpespasm- 08-10-2005

so the camcorders can survive going 88mph? any videos of the trip morcheeba? seriously though, why do you figure it came back as 2052 when the clock lost charge?

zapped- 08-10-2005

seriously though, why do you figure it came back as 2052 when the clock lost charge? I figure that in 2052 things will not need batteries, they will be powered by thin air...the clock simply realized it was being powered by thin air and adjusted itself accordingly.
