Openmoko
It's finally out (the updated version with Wifi). http://us.direct.openmoko.com/ Originally promised for Sept. 2007....but...well it's out now so Woooo!

BeesCUV- 07-05-2008

That's a broken web site. Why deal with anybody too challenged to build a basic web site ? :?: So how do you like your moko ? come on, be honest, you don't have a moko because when you go to the web site, its impossilbe to 'buy'. Are you getting kickbacks or just using this board for you own commercial venture ?

So how do you like your moko ? come on, be honest, you don't have a moko because when you go to the web site, its impossilbe to 'buy'. wtf? first page on that website has a "buy it now" button.

BeesCUV- 07-06-2008
Did you hit 'buy it now' button ?
Did you hit 'buy it now' button ? Why assume it works without checking ? Didn't PT Barnum say a 'sucker is born every minute' ? Your support of the Barnum rule is duly noted. :P Perhaps a verification of the Murphy rule too ? hope the razing is taken in good humor as intended. 8) hope everyone had a fine 4th ! :D Yes we have no mokos (bannanas) today.

Are you getting kickbacks or just using this board for you own commercial venture ?   ...How is the site broken? And as for it being "impossible" to buy, did you hit the buy it now button? It works perfectly fine, as you can see by the purchasing options on the left side. The checkout also works, so "why assume it works without checking?" Or is that an ill reference to the fact that they are sold out? Or are you just an Apple fanboy? And no, he doesn't have his moko yet because he is part of a group buy <10 pack> and shipping takes time...

It worked today  But the 4th of july it went to distributors. :? Good quick fix. :) Still not explained what a commercial is doing on here. :( I thought this was for hobbiest/hackers and I thought admins had a policy against advertising/promoting commercial productrs here. :? Obviously I am incorrect as this advertisement/promotion proves. 8) thx for quick feedback.. :D

Amyn- 07-06-2008

I thought this was for hobbiest/hackers and I thought admins had a policy against advertising/promoting commercial productrs here. :? Exactly. The OpenMoko is an open platform with open source code. It is geard towards tech enthusiats and hobbiest/hackers. Bobbarker isn't simply posting an ad - he's an active member here and this is hacker-friendly product. You might want to clarify with them, but to my understanding, the admins don't have a problem unless it is considered spam or an unfair deal Edit: typo

ANYBODY WANT A CAM? 300 BUCKS! EDIT: Whoops, my B.

brite_eye- 07-07-2008

ANYBODY WANT A CAM? 300 BUCKS! The price is 400 (399) and it doesn't even have a cam! From the Financial Times at http://blogs.ft.com/techblog/2008/07/freerunner-no-longer-has-a-free-run-at-open-source/ : At the end of the day both the hardware and operating system matter and the free runner does not offer very good value for money on the hardware side. No 3g not even edge, no camera, very low ram and flash. These are all significant drawbacks. Posted by: Saif Ahmed | July 6th, 2008 at 9:06 pm Please explain how one of these is even worth the reduced group buy price of $369!

bobbarker- 07-07-2008

Yes it has reduced specs and no 3G, but I'm going to be spending the next 5 years on a campus with wifi all around me...won't need to worry about 2.5G speeds. Yeah it has no camera but I can't remember the last time I thought "oh yeah I'll use my cellphone for this" it always ends up "oh I'll use the DSLR on my shoulder". BUT The biggest thing for me is having a handy dandy easy to dev for platform I can carry with me. It's got GPS/Wifi/BT/GSM with a 640x480 touchscreen and linux (oh and USB host). I think of it more as a tiny computer than a cellphone (I know, it's not one) which makes it feel more worth while. All in all it feels more or less like the GP2X but aiming at the cell market. It probably won't ever be popular to the masses but those who already like the idea, they'll adore it. As for the site being borked: Yeah I have no idea. I'm in a group buy and a 10 pack was bought a day or two before I posted this. It worked before...so who knows.

Got mine today. Love it. Having had to spend time jailbreaking iphones...this I just...ssh right in. It's a dream! I am incredibly jealous. first I need to wait ~1 year for my verizon contract to expire, second I need the money to afford the phone, which will prove to be tough because I am getting a laptop for college around the same time that my subscription ends. Also, I am going to be buying the guitar that I have always wanted and am saving up for (so, $2800 new for the guitar, and ~$1000 for the lappy leaves me with probably negative money for the new phone :()
