PV2Fetch 0.4 is out. ( http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=134210&package_id=169980 ) Just a minor release. The changlog excerpt says it all... 0.3->0.4 11/24/05 -switched out dcraw's SMaL decoder for Sailpix's. This eliminates black bar artifacts that sometimes would turn up in some bright images, as well as processing images that previously refused to process.

I was wondering what - if anything - had been lost when DC rewrote my code into a simpler version. One of us can send him images which didn't decompress well using his code - I didn't ever really understand details of his rewrite. Was this the problem with tech1229's .RAW which crashed the app?

BillW- 11-25-2005

With the grea-*test*-('") respect for his other obvious talents, his code isn't exactly the easiest to follow. That said, it looks like he dropped the decompress post-processing completely. I discovered the app-crashing raw after the 0.4 release. I -*test*-('")ed a couple of his others and they went through fine, same as all of my other comparison raws. I'm sure I just missed clamping some value in one of the filters which probably rarely needs the clamp. Easy enough to track down.

great job on pv2fetch. I am very impressed! Skin tones look great! (my first pic of me of course with pv2fetch) Hey, was that you in Trader Joe's Cambridge Friday night?

PV2Fetch 0.5 is out. ( http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=134210&package_id=169980 ) Now with improved noise reduction. The changlog excerpt... 0.4->0.5 11/26/05 -Fixed float crash that would happen on rare images. -Tweaked sharpening routine to reject more noise. -Set jpeg output quality to 95%, which should reduce filesizes greatly.

BillW- 11-26-2005

PV2Fetch 0.6 is out. ( http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=134210&package_id=169980 ) The changlog excerpt... 0.5->0.6 11/26/05 -Fixed masking holes that would occur in some images.

Hey, was that you in Trader Joe's Cambridge Friday night? probably, im in there a lot.

binaryweaver- 11-27-2005

PV2Fetch0.6 works great.

DBD- 11-27-2005

I concur, thanks Bill! The fast moving development on this is appreciated too.

bupkis- 11-27-2005

PV2Fetch0.6 works great. Indeed. Keep up the good work, BillW. It has definitely surpassed the FF2 drivers. They are -slightly- less sharp, but that's a small price to pay for getting rid of the noise. For some reason I still like the FF2's skin tones, but overall pv2fetch still wins.

Hey, was that you in Trader Joe's Cambridge Friday night? probably, im in there a lot. Saw this young* guy carrying a bunch of flowers (?) and thought he looked familiar. Next time I saw your self-portrait, I thought that might have been you. *of course, at my age, everybody else looks young ...

enigma-- 11-27-2005

nope, wasn't me, i definately wasnt carrying flowers

Thanks for the support guys! I'm glad that others are finding it useful. I wish I had held on to my RAW files along the way, because I remember tossing out some good pics because of bad background noise. Bupkis, there's still hope for the skin tones and color realism. At this point I've just accepted whatever the cam gave me followed by the auto white balance routine inherited from dcraw. I have a few thoughts on things I can do... the RAW headers include a field called hue that I'd like to explore (perhaps it's an amount to skew the hue with in a HSV color model?) Additionally, it might be possible to reverse the CVS color mapping by taking a bunch of pv2fetch processed pics and compare them to the CVS counterparts - that may or may not work, depending if CVS is skewing the color mapping depending on light conditions in the photo.

binaryweaver- 11-27-2005

I've noticed some oddities in the way the camera handles color under certain conditions. I recently shot a photo that had a dark background with a subject that was predominantly red. When "developed", the red came out fine but the skin tones were eerily green.

This is probably not the thread to post this in, but I wanted to share my experience with the foxz2 driver.. Couldn't see any pictures, couldn't delete any pictures, nothin. It just knew when the camera was plugged in, and that's it.
