Rite Aid model 400... hackable?
Hi everybody. I just came across this whole world of PV2 camera hacking and was extremely alarmed when I saw that most of the work/development on the sites I was reading was done a couple years ago. I've been so excited about it the last couple days, and hoped there was still interest and people doing this stuff, because I reeeaaallly want to do this. I was thrilled to find this forum, and hope I can get some help. Anyway, I went to my local Rite Aid, who seems to sell a re-branded version of the same 2 models (red, and blue/LCD) everybody's talking about, and picked up one of each. After finding this forum and doing some homework, I see that the blue/LCD identifies itself as model 510 (with firmware 0253, it says), which, as I understand from reading other threads/posts, is presently unhackable. (correct me if I'm wrong). That's fine. Now, the Red one. The thing is, it identifies itself as Model 400. Not sure if others have encountered this, and what the verdict is. It looks like the typical red model (6600, I guess?). Here's a pic I took in the store, just to show the models and make sure I'm not nuts: I did the hold-all-the-buttons-down trick to get more info, and it displays: EA, 60, 44, 23, 31, 08 Not exactly sure what that tells... just trying to give all the info I have. So, is this probably compatible with an existing method of hacking? Anybody done one of these? Would love some help. Much thanks in advance. I really love little communities like this, and look forward to joining you guys in having some fun with all this.

Don't forget to download pv2devkit so you can get started writing your own programs in assembly to run on the camera.

Hmmm, interesting. And very cool. What sort of connector do I need, to be able to plug the 400 into USB? Is this the one where you sort of have to make your own? (sorry for the n00bish question)

While I appreciate the "please", I don't appreciate the implied assumption that I have not made an effort to read the forum and FAQs. This is a big forum with a lot of information, a lot of threads, about different models of camera with different firmware linking to different sites, different pages, different tutorials, some broken links, and some outdated info. So please bear with me, as a newcommer, if I'm looking for a little confirmation on how to proceed. As I noted, I had taken the time to look around and came across a link to http://cexx.org/dakota/ which talks about putting together a customized cable to go from the camera to USB. It is not terribly specific on the models, and in fact the images appear to be of the predecessor Dakota model. So, again, please forgive me if I was interested in getting some confirmation that I was on the right track, or if anybody knew that my model does not use the same port. Both of my cameras (including the blue/LCD model) appear to use the same physical port, even though I've been told that the blue/LCD does not use USB to communicate, so that's one more reason I was unsure. So, look, I'm just trying to explain where I'm coming from here, and maybe this is all obvious and old news to you, nevermore, but I'm still trying to jump around here and get all the right info and make sure I'm not about to go buy materials that won't work. Anyway. I'll be working under the assumption that I just need to follow the instruction on http://cexx.org/dakota/ to build a cable and go from there. I appreciate the help I've gotten so far.

All the cables/connections are the same except the M510...

On one hand, those of us who have been around longer may tire of the newbie who seems to not help themselves to the search function. On the other hand I realize that often the information one is looking for is really hard to find. Just the other day I had a hard time finding out how to silence my camera using a software modification method. So, please don't be offended if we are a little grouchy from time to time and welcome to pv2 hacking.

Thanks man. And I understand... I didn't mean to start things out argumentively, but the information that exists on all this is still pretty scattered for a lot of it. And, for example, the search function in my case wouldn't really help me a lot since the information I was seeking was off the forum, and because I was unsure if my model number worked the same as others... an example of something you have to kind of know from being around. I'm anxiously looking forward to putting together a cable so I can start playing with this stuff and hopefully my future questions/discussions will be in a more comparably sophisticated realm to where you guys are at.

don't worry about. just make it really clear in the message that you have at least tried. i know that with myself, i am more willing to help someone who has already tried to help themselves. especially over someone who gives the persona of sticking their hand out and saying 'gimme'. unfortunately, your question was right on the edge, and i didn't answer it, to wait for others to have a chance. it not being your first post, i would have given the benefit of the doubt. unfortunately, i think the elders of this forum has taught the newcomers to be caustic to the new individuals, especially if they were primed that way due to their seemingly stupid questions. observe this example thread...i wound up having to do a bit of censoring: http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=6441&highlight=

Well, I finally got a Palm III cradle a few days ago, dismantled it, stripped a USB cable, and with a little help, soldered it all together via the instructions on http://www.maushammer.com/systems/dakotadigital/dl-palm.html. I think it went pretty well, and I think my solder is good. I used the PV2 QuickInstall to load the PV2 Utilities, and the Libusb drivers, and it seemed to install successfully. The PV2 Tools 2.14 runs, shows me the menu and everything. However, I plug the camera in, and unfortunately, they are not on speaking terms. The most I get is Windows trying to figure out what drivers it needs to read the camera (though it does recognize it as a "Digital Camera"), and when I try to "Open" it in PV2 Tools, it says "Couldn't find camera." I understand from one of the ReadMe's that this probably means that my cable is bad. But, I feel like I did a decent job with it. The camera does a high-speed doorbell-like high-tone,low-tone sound when it's disconnected from the computer, so I feel like the camera knows it's plugged in, but they just can't communicate. Does anyone have any insight into something I may have done incorrectly or not at all that would keep this from working? Otherwise I guess I'll be buying a new Palm III connector and try making a new cable, but I really hope I don't need to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

When Windows finds the new hardware and needs a driver, make sure to point it to the inf file you created with the inf wizard.

ryan_w- 03-03-2008

Ah! Thank you! I think that was it. The ReadMe had me a little confused on that part. I hadn't realized it wanted me to point Windows at the INF file. But I did that and now it recognizes it and I successfully Opened the camera with PV2 Tools. I'm so excited, it's a shame I have to run off to work and wait until tonight before trying to unlock it. It sounds a little involved from the directions at http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=339&start=0 so I want to make sure I have time and do it correctly. But I'm very relieved it's not my cable. Thanks again! :D

ryan_w- 03-03-2008

Bummer! I Opened the camera and clicked the Unlock button, but it could not unlock the camera with any of the known keys. Here's what it showed me: 08 2C E1 D5 6F 2F 79 6B D2 D6 53 B6 AB 5C C8 75 4F 15 F6 24 D3 0A CC C6 C7 E3 61 E2 21 0B 8A CC 78 0E AB 25 73 46 CD A5 80 B6 F1 18 C9 36 A4 A7 64 D1 D4 59 C9 6B E2 DA 8A A6 F8 7A 3E 07 9D 78 BE 55 87 81 95 42 B0 74 B1 4E AC 68 5F E7 39 F0 76 D5 18 9E D1 D5 1B C5 03 84 80 83 47 7F 7D FF B6 C9 1C F0 BD 6D 49 5F CD 64 29 AD 54 B8 AE D7 ED EA 69 F9 D3 92 9F 11 9C 45 9E 06 24 BB 51 E9 Now I'm not sure what to try... any suggestions? Thanks
