But since I was modding the thing and I stabbed the same middle finger on my left hand twice in the same half an hour very hard with the exacto. ooh, that sucks. on my desk i have about 10 open blades for utility knives, i dont use the holders, but the blades bare or all my cutting needs, but about 8 months ago i was useing a new one (a lot sharper then i was used to) and cut through more then hald of my thumb. a night in the ER and 8 months later the nervs in the tip of my thumb still arnt quite right, some parts i can touch and not feal it. i know you dont want advice from a 16 year old, but just watchout for those blades :) and yeah, altoid tins seem to have become a unaversal unit of measurement, it has replaced the proverbial "bread box" ... Yep - you have to be careful with sharp tools. :D When I was in middle school, I was carving a wooden statuette, and sliced through to the bone between my thumb and pointer finger. I can still remember looking into the cut, and seeing the glistening white. What was amazing was that it didn't bleed all that much. (the knife was extremely sharp) Fortunately, no nerves were damaged, so my hand works just fine. Unfortunately, 12 years later I found myself trying to extricate a piece of copper wire from a light switch in my apartment. I was trying to poke a jewelers screwdriver into the hole to get the clip to release when it slipped, and the copper wire poked a hole into the side of my hand. That time, it DID hit a nerve. I lost feeling along the right side of my right hand for several hours. Again, thankfully, my hand still worked - I just couldn't feel anything there. Today, I still occasionally feel a tingling sensation where the injury occurred. It's more bothersome than anything else, but it's a reminder to be careful when working with tools.

Please learn to use search function. Didn't you take any pix before removing lens? What drivers are you using to take pictures - or are you extracting from avi files? How did you unlock your 220? The 220 has been documented more than once as being different than 200. The newer 220 actually uses the same imager as original model 100s. http://www.demanufacturing.com/pv2/www/brite_eye/lenses.jpg forumer.com/viewtopic.php?p=12582#12582" target="_blank">http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?p=12582#12582 forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=2364" target="_blank">http://camerahacks.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=2364 I did search, just not as well as you did apparently. Anyway, I took apart a broken HP and found a pretty useful lens there, but this would have been much easer.

Has anyone succeeded in removing the IR filter from a model 220's lens? I almost gouged my finger with an exacto. So I thought I would ask before I make anymore stabbing attempts the the fingers.

Well I managed to break one apart. The whole lens assembly consists of many pieces. Unfortunately there is no filter to remove from the M220 lens that I can tell. The filter appears to be coated on a required lens, though I can not verify because I broke the lens. If we want IR mods for the M220, we will definately need an easier to mod lens.

I did manage to remove an IR filter from one of my 220s without amputating anything. IIRC, I had to cut almost 1mm down in between the plastic retaining ring and the lens assembly before it came loose. The IR filter is actually a coating on another lens, but you can focus the cam without it, just takes a little trial and error. (sorry I didn't document or take any pics, kind of a spur of the moment thing)

I was never able to get it to focus right. How did you adjust it?

bobbarker- 05-01-2006

If you just twist the lens around you can focus it. I know for the M200s it would need to be out a bit of a turn (not much) to be back in focus (the removed layer cause the lens to go further in). So..in short, screw in the lens until you get resistance, then unscrew it a bit more and you should be close to focused.

brandonu- 05-01-2006

I adjusted while powered up so I could see how close it was to being focused. Mine is threaded almost all the way down, with maybe 1 to 11/2 threads still showing.

Hi, i have an m230 and yes, the IR filter is spayed over a magnifing lens... i removed the lens and now the field of vision is way smaller, and i also screwed the mounting barely to the end on the board. The video quality isn't great... i think it's fuzzier because IR light is shining (on a sunny day) and is reflected way different from normal light, everything is contorned by and \"aura\" of light. I still have to get my IR leds and have a decent -*test*-('") in night condition. I strongly you suggest to do the brightness adj for the LCD screen, it's really usefull to use the cam in the night and to lower the \"new\" light coming out from LCD. (sorry, my english i quite rusty...)

Webcam lens replacement
Just thought id share my experience removing the IR filter on an M230 cam. The lens basically came out withough much of a fight, however whilst i was holding the lens housing with a pair of pliers i foolishy stripped the fragile plastic threads on it. My solution was to disassemble a cheap webcam i had laying about, and use its lens for the CVS cam... turns out, not only did it fit perfectly, but both mounting screws for it were in the exact same spots, and all i had to do was adjust the focus... i can't tell for sure since it's been modified for IR, but id have to say the quality is actually better with the new lens than it was before. Maybe others can give this a shot too... i took apart a different webcam and the lens inside was the same (maybe it a standard?) Next project: Since im so fascinated by this whole lens thing, my next attempt will be to secure an actual camcorder zoom lens to a CVS cam. Hehe, wish me luck!

I replaced a m230 lens with a \\\"board mount\\\" cctv lens see ebay item 280030297617 - good lens, but needed an extender to get focus to work The lens has no built-in IR filter so one gets the purple cast from the IR light with normal illumination. The board mount is a standard in many cctv and webcams. I'm working on getting an IR filter to fit it so I can use it both at night with IR illumination and during the day with correct visible light color registration. The visible light filter is a circle of totally exposed film, following standard practice. will post details when project is done. That way one gets both improved quality and the IR ability

is the ir filter used in focus at all? because mine seems to be concave on one side and flat on the other.

SaturnNiGHTS- 08-24-2007

it's an extra layer of optics, and you do need to account for it in the lens focal tube. that's about it.
