SD card mod
Can anyone taking FF2s apart describe sd card circuits and potential for replicating on pv2s. binaryweaver, did your blues arrive and what is your initial assesment? Can you post email for remaining 4? I may want a metal blue case for my FF3 instead of larger cheap plastic one.

Still waiting for the blues. I pay via money order, so it takes me a little longer to get stuff in. They should be in either today or tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I also heard that there are headers on the circuit board for two more buttons... so with a SD reader, and two more buttons, could we have a fully functional, take-a-look-at-all-ur-photos camera? or delete any picture thats on the camera? take more than 25 pics? god, yall have me hooked on this thing......... i need more stuff to solder onto the board!

The 6520/2B version I just picked up only has a connection for one extra button, not two as on the 6520/27 model. I can post images of the boards if anyone is interested. The "2B" board has "Rev 2.0" printed on it, while "27" has "Rev 1.0" on it. So you'd want to try to find the older cameras ... I think the date on the "27" was something like March of 2004, while the "2B" has a date of July, if I recall. On a slightly different note - there are two small holes on the side of the camera body up near the shutter. Anyone have any ideas why they are there? Could some sort of customized probe be used there to reset the camera ... or something? I took a look at the board and nothing seemed obvious. But then again, I ain't no EE :)

Holes on body
On a slightly different note - there are two small holes on the side of the camera body up near the shutter. Anyone have any ideas why they are there? Could some sort of customized probe be used there to reset the camera ... or something? I took a look at the board and nothing seemed obvious. I saw those too. I tried probing each which way with a bent paperclip, and no go. I also didn't see anything on board. My best guess is the Pure Digital techs have a 2 pronged tool that they stick in there and twist to easily pry the camera body apart.

i want the sd reader! ive even got an 64meg sd card that i was using for my palm (which isnt used ANY more...)

i think the two dots is there for a hanging strap or something

My best guess is the Pure Digital techs have a 2 pronged tool that they stick in there and twist to easily pry the camera body apart. I doubt they'll be using something like that there. Those holes are too gentle to handle such a preasure. Besides, there's a huge hole on the opposite side, which lets your whole finger fit in, it's much easier to pull it open from there. (although, they're probably using those jewlery tools to open it.) Personally, I think these were meant for strap attachment, but even for that I fee lthey are a bit too flimsy. They are in the right location and everything, for a strap (look at regular cams for refrence), so maybe it's doable. I was planning on using it in my case mod for a strap, as it is, but I think I'm going to make some kind of reinforcement there, just in case. My girlfriend tends to drop things off her hands, so I wouldn't want it dropping because of a faulty strap as well. ;) Back to the SD subject... Using Photoshop, I can easily download the photos from the camera, and even reset the counter, format the "card", and everything. When I reset the counter, it pops me a message saying that all data, on memory, AND SD card, will be erased, so unless it is derived from the FF2 drivers, I'm guessing the CVS Red also has the option for an SD card? If so, has anyone located the pinout for this? I'd be happy to get the pieces needs and solder an SD slot, if someone can provide me with the instructions.

I really want to try and get an SD card installed on this thing. I think it would be very cool to be able to take as many pictures as I want, on my own cards.

Here is a closeup showing almost identical chip on FF2 to morcheeba's documented K9F2808U0B-YCBO only there is a C instead of a B at end of K9 number. An interesting observation is that it sits directly above SD slot. That could just be coincidence but it may mean they share some hardware and software possibly making it easier to add one on a drugstore digital. http://www.demanufacturing.com/pv2/www/brite_eye/ff2_chip.jpg That was one of my last pictures taken with best of 4 $11 dead FF2s that I have now resurrected, before going completely dead (no juice, no usb recognition). I guess I was prewarned since in taking approx 10 chip shots it only flashed for half. It was also the camera I used to capture debayered 6410.

not shure
im not so shure that the sd card mod can be done the processor pinout/accessability is going to be the hurdle in connecting up the hardware ive posted some closeups of a ff2 sd card pinout the only thing i can be shure of is that data 1'2'3' are shorted leaving data 0 and the rest to wire thats 6 wires minimum for hookup pins 1.2&9 hooked together"data 1.2.3." pin 3 cmd i/o pns 4&7 gnd pin 5 vdd switched pin 6 sync/clock pin 8 data 0 oh yea the presence switch for the sd card insertion that too anyway all the data clock and cmd lines seem to hook up directly to the micro i was hoping for some parellel connections to the other ic's to make connection points onto (you just cant get to the processor to make connections) http://img169.echo.cx/img169/4224/s53001099dm.jpg http://img169.echo.cx/img169/5174/s53001140yq.jpg anyway im open to any other ideas but it looks like its not going to be an easy solder on also due to the tri layered board havent found the data 1.2.3. pin on the processor (some pins dont penetrate all the way through) sigh. teslafreak

Why not use imageShack, or something like that? I'm not using Yahoo, and can't view the images.

teslafreak- 05-16-2005

ok put em up on imageshack

If we're looking at modding a PV2 to accept expansion memories, Smartmedia might be a better choice (if it's still being used; my parents' old digital isn't exactly the best indicator). Both the onboard NAND flash and Smartmedia cards use the same pins/protocol/etc. for data transfer, etc. There are some differences with larger cards (64mb and up, I think--address load stage is longer) than with smaller cards, so this might not be ideal either. Could be able to get to 32Mb, though, by replacing the onboard flash with a Smartmedia card. Also, this *might* be a way to get pictures off of a locked camera -- instead of replacing the NAND, tack a SM card onto the NAND's pins (very few, NAND memory is nice like that). When the camera saves the pictures, they'll be saved to both onboard NAND and SM. Just a thought.

If/when you get the hardware pinout figured out for the SD card then you will need some serious firmware modification. I believe $f306:f303 is the 32-bit address for SD card transfers. $f312 seems to be the register that changes to zero when the transfer is complete, and $f313 seems to be set to $01 to start transfer and to $00 after transfer is done.
