WARNING!! WARNING!!
After downloading a file and then powering down, STATFILE.TXT is placed in the partition of the last downloaded file. I noticed this while -*test*-('")ing my camcorder keycatch which requires downloading USP.BIN in P3. Having a STATFILE.TXT in P3 is not a problem but if you downloaded a file in P2 the statfile update on power down will move part of firmware due to idiotic sharing of a flash block between firmware and P2 (resulting in a brick).
EDIT: SaturnNiGHTS: warnings are good to know. stickied.

Oh, so that is why my 53.14 went haywire when i tried to download USBMODEDESC. from the p2 partition.

If you wish to download anything in p2, use OPS download flash function selecting p2. You can then safely extract what you need using winImage. Another alternative is to always reset partition back to no_name by dumping its statfile.txt or a video before hitting camcorder power button or unplugging (clicking OPS power down button is immediate and thus without risk).

In laymans terms, what does this mean?
What can I or can't I do?
I just bought this version camera today 53.14 (3-8-08) and want to know what my limits are.
I did unlock it and got my video off, but after reading this I'm too afraid to change anything on the unit in terms of settings.
The things I do to my cameras normaly are (3.40)
1) Up the video to 640x480
2) Change the bit rate to superhigh 512....
3) And then play with the startup shutdown images (P4 resourcesC)
4) Should I, or can I, reset the camera keys?
Is this warning affecting any of those things above, or is this warning for super-tweakers of the cameras?
Thanks in advance.

Don't do anything in P2 partition.

I don't know where the settings are stored?
So I'm good for the logo changes then, sweet..
So does changing any of those settings affect partition 2?
SaturnNiGHTS- 03-09-2008
usp.bin is mentioned in this post and shown in OPS as being in partition 3. all images describe working on partition 4 only.
none of the above say 2. in short, stay out of 2, and you will be fine.
hence, the warning.

Awesome thanks!
Is there a thread that describes each Partition?
I looked high and low though the threads and could not find much on the subject...

people normally look at what's in the partitions in ops to see what's in them.

I believe morcheeba (our SuperHacker responsible for initial success on PV2 and Saturn) has the best description at
http://www.maushammer.com/systems/cvscamcorder/flash.html
And retired hack BillW (OPS, Ceres, pv2tool, most posts ...) thread at:
